Lead a group of enthusiasts down the right road and you can feel it happen. Everyone settles in. The drive starts to mean something.

Lead that same group down a gravel road and you feel every stone the tires pick up.

I've been there. I only let it happen once.


Waze is not the foundation of a rally. Plenty of groups follow the app and hope for the best. I drive the road first, then drive it again.

Northwestern Connecticut is the proving ground. Some of the best pavement in the state is there. So are the wrong turns: a twisty line on the map that becomes a farm lane no caravan belongs on. One of those is all it takes to undo a great day.


A road can look right on the screen. And even when it is paved, the real question is whether it holds up to low-profile tires and a sport-tuned suspension. A map cannot answer that, but the sports car will.

Every road gets scrutinized personally, against a set of factors I have refined over the years. Those methods are mine to keep, and yours to trust.


A route is built for a number, too. Twelve cars is the cap, and the roads set that limit as much as I do.

Past a certain size a group stops moving as one. The front clears a corner while the back is still waiting to enter it, gaps stretching and snapping shut, the accordion that ruins most big drives. A turnout that fits a dozen cars will not hold twenty.

Keep it small and the convoy stays together. It takes an intersection in a single pass, pulls off to regroup without spilling onto the road, and the day holds its shape.


The application is a gate, but it protects the drive. It is not about the car. A sorted 1980s hot hatch and a modern touring car share the road as equals here.

What I look for is simpler than a spec sheet: whether you hold pace, give the car ahead room, and drive the road with respect. That is the whole filter.


Hours go into shaping a single route. Days into getting one right.

None of that effort is visible to the drivers. They only feel it in the corners and on the straights, when the whole thing just flows.
